5 September is the birth anniversary of Dr. Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan, born on 5 September 1888. He was a philosopher and academic who became independent India's first Vice-President, serving from 1952 to 1962, and its second President, from 1962 to 1967. He received the Bharat Ratna in 1954.

The commonly told account is that when he became President in 1962, a group of his former students asked permission to celebrate his birthday. He suggested that rather than marking it as his own, the day be observed as Teachers' Day — as recognition of the profession rather than the individual. India has observed 5 September as Teacher's Day since 1962.

Who was Dr. Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan?

Radhakrishnan was a teacher long before he was a statesman, and that is the point of the date. He taught philosophy at the University of Mysore and later at Calcutta University, and held the Spalding Professorship of Eastern Religions and Ethics at the University of Oxford — one of the first Indians to hold a senior chair at a Western university.

His work focused on interpreting Indian philosophy for Western audiences at a time when very little of that bridge existed. He served as India's Ambassador to the Soviet Union before becoming Vice-President.

Is Teacher's Day the same as World Teachers' Day?

No. These are two different observances and are frequently confused.

• Teacher's Day (India) — 5 September, marking Dr. Radhakrishnan's birth anniversary, observed since 1962.
• World Teachers' Day — 5 October, established by UNESCO in 1994 and observed internationally.

Some Indian institutions mark both. Most mark only 5 September.

How is Teacher's Day celebrated in India?

Celebrations are largely school- and college-led rather than public or governmental. Typical observances include:

• Role reversal — senior students take over classes for the day and teach junior years. This is the most widespread tradition in Indian schools.

Teacher's Day and Guru Purnima are also different

Guru Purnima is a separate observance rooted in Hindu, Buddhist and Jain tradition, falling on the full moon of the Hindu month of Ashadha — which places it in June or July, varying year to year. In 2026 it fell on 29 July.

Guru Purnima honours the guru in a spiritual and traditional sense. Teacher's Day on 5 September honours the teaching profession in a civic and modern one. Many people in India observe both.
